A show after the East coast tour ,,year?, Win?
Reply Quote

Ok,, This  has been buggen me for a long time. I can't remember the year  , but I do remember what happened, I think? I dream of this acouple times a year, so as I get older , and older ,and well older ,,,, I just cant seem to remember  the exact location of the show, and cant seem to find it in the corpsboards shows,,, etc. on the web. This is what I do remember: I Think !

1. We had just come back from the East coast, after winning alot out there. Undefeated???  Won Worlds ??

2. We were in the midwest at this show,,,Rockford? Wheaton? I wanna say it was Rockford.

2. The other corps there was the Cavaliers ?? , whom we had not seen since the East Coast tour. I remember talking to some Cavie guys ,,who said you think you're hot shots now , winning out East,, well thats all over tonight. I was a little "shxt",  14, 15 , but i remember thinking to myself ,,, I'll get  , "animal"  ( Denny Heidman) to beat the crap outta you buddy.,,, Anyway ,,

3. I think it was also the last show of the year. We went on ,,and I have never remembered a show like this. Just out  there. Our tempo was runnen 3 times as fast, people had intense looks on their faces,,and I remember looking out of the corner of my eyes and seeing , John Kruger on bass drum ,,,,( sorry , but THIS I do remember) ,,lifting his feet soooo high while marching ,,I had never seen this before!!!( I use to kid John constantly about raising his feet higher when he marched, in our bass drum squad. ) It was a charge of energy that I just had not felt ,,or at least don't remember feeling  ever before at ANY show.

Anyway , I remember almost running to Bill Bailey the tempo was so fast off the field, that I thought I was gonna trip. I THINK we won the show by a tenth or 2 over the Cavies??????? Or not,,,, Crowd went NUTS

I remember Chip, getting the corps in a half circle and playing the show to the crowd after it was over.

Was I dreamen all this ??? LOL

I also have dreams about the garbage can fight we had with Garfield Cadets at the rest stop on one of our East coast tours !!  Yeah ,,I dream alot !!!!

If anyone has the faintest idea what I'm talken about ,,,please let me know , so I don't think I'm going nuts.!!!! Thanks, Larry Schuck

Hey Larry,  How's it going?

Here is what I remember -

Winning the World Open out east in 1967, then coming home and beating the Cavies for the first time at the Rockford show on Labor Day. I think that was also the year we had either our first or second run-in with St. Lucy's, and garbage cans were involved.  I don't remember ever having problems with Garfield - Actually, I remember going drinking with some Garfield guys on one of the East coast trips and having a pretty good time, and making fun of the way they said "pawk" (i.e. park) and "tawnic" (i.e. tonic, which was their word for Pepsi and Coke)  Also, I think Billy was DM by 1967, not Chip.

Re: the Rockford show - I remember that being the last show of the year, but I also remember the Maywood show at Proviso East and that seems like it was the last show of the year too.  Does anyone remember which was which?????

Thanks!

Jim Grosso

Hi Guys,

Also in 1967, the Cavies won VFW Nationals (we should have because we were awsome that night, but one horn judge screwed us). We took 3rd at Nationals that year. After Nationals, I believe we won every show out east, then came back for Rockford and beat the VFW National Champions! I guess that made us the Super champions!  I don't know what you call a corps thats better than the best, but that was us in 1967, The Vanguard!

Hey Jim,

I thought *I* was the only one who remembered that "Garbage Can Incident" with St Lucy's.

But here is the weird thing   - a couple weeks ago, I happened to run into (and then chatted with) a real live  St. Lucy's alumn, who marched that year and remembered that incident ... I asked him if there was anything in particular that they hated about us - and he said "no", actually, but apparently we had our own "reputation" and being from "Chicago" kind of made us likely tough guys.

I got a similar reply from a guy who marched with the Boston Crusaders (who also hated us) back then, and he is the friendliest guy in the world - and when I asked him about their hatred of us he said, "Hell, we were taught to hate EVERYBODY" all the way back to when the core of the Crusaders that we knew were in the Gatesmen from South Boston.

..... And all these years I though it was something personal, too!

Hey Jay!!!!  I only remembered the garbage can incident because I was involved with a similiar " incident" last month with some people at work, and it jogged my memory. I know ,,where the hell does he work! Well ,I've been in law enforcement for a long time,, on the good guys side ,,,:)   I see it alot.  Anyway , I thought it was with Garfield that we had the scrap with ,,,,,, (old man memories) glad to hear it was with St. Lucys,, yeah that makes sense. ,,,,,,,, Nancy, (sister) thought it was Garfield also ,,,shes more senile then me! OOOOKKKK   ,, Later

Yeah - I am not sure why I remember that it was St Lucy's, but I do.

On lots of these things, there are some I have real vivid memories and some, well,  lets just say I don't remember squat!

I think on this one I found it easily to distinguishe between Garfield and St Lucy's due to Don Angelica having been writing the Garfield show back then, and that he and Unrath (therefore, they and us) were on pretty GOOD terms.  If you recall, I think for a couple years back in the early 60s (62, 63?) I think the Vanguard was also invited to Garfield's in shows in Jersey.

St Lucy's, on the other hand, was pretty foreign to me when first met them....

As I remember, we (the VG) had Garfield appear at our show. I'm guessing that it would've been '62 or '63. They stayed in a motel in Niles, and some of us visited them. They seemed to be okay people.

Many of us old farts were aware that they almost pulled off a miracle at the '58 Am. Legion Nationals in Chicago. They had been dropped by their church sponsor. (Holy Name) and had to pay their own way, buy makeshift uniforms and use borrowed (from Hawthorne, I think) instruments. They took second to Blessed Sac! As a result, they had our respect and admiration for years to come. Very gutsy.

As I recall Garfield stayed at motel on Lincoln Ave in Chicago,  somewhere north of Bryn Mawr and southeast of California.  I remember driving over there to check it out.

As far as our trip to New Jersey for the Cadet's show, it must have been '63, or mabe 62?  I don't remember whether we were off that night or not but we were beat by an all girl corps from Canada.  The great part of that trip is we stayed in the homes of the corps members.  Wayne Diehl and I stayed with a family that had two kids in the corps.  When we arrived at their apartment they had a spread that was outstanding and after dinner they took us to Palasades Park.  The amusement park on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River, decribed in a popular rock song several years later.  Many Vanguards were there with their host families.  What a great time, I'll never forget the fun house.

The garbage can incident with St Lucy's happened at the Allegheny County Fair Grounds after the mid day show.  Bob Cochran, Jay Kneble, his squeeze at the time and I had driven all night to see the show in Emaus Pa. and it was rained out.  I drove to Pittsburgh all night to get to  the show at the fair grounds.  As I recall the Vanguard won.  It had to be 66 or 67 because we were no longer marching.

After the show we drove to where the busses were loading for the trip home.  There was this stone throwing incident between The Vanguard and St Lucy's but they stayed 50+ yards apart.  There was a lot of yelling and nothing else.  Eventually everyone got on the bus and left for home.

The horn judge at 67 Nationals in New Orleans was Pinky Shrapner from Minnesota.  The same guy that dumped the horn line at Nationals in Minnesota in '59.  The Vanguard was the favorite to win that night but no one told Pinky.

Seems like a old post but this is a trip. I hope you guys get this post. Im on the net, just searching around for some good old drum corp clips and came across what i am guessing is a vanguard forum. And hope after i tell you this you will understand this brought back some memories for me to.

It seems that the bulk of the conversation is about the can incident. Well i marched with St. Lucy's from 64 to 69 and was at the fair grounds that wonderful day. I played soprano horn, I had to be around 15 - 16 yrs. old. Than marched with Hawthorne Cabs for 71 to 74 so i have it in my blood. I probably can write a novel about some of the guys that were in the corp, but from what i can remember it all started on retreat, you guys started coming off after the scores, passing in front of us and our guard was told to move back some to make room for (you guys had a large corp if i recall) so you to get past and of course after getting beat, some of the elite? decided that won't float. So what i do remember is they sent 1 bus with whoever wanted to go back to the parking area, and 2 buses stayed. Well i decide to get on the first bus. While we were sitting around we start eating watermelon just hanging out. Then two or three of your buses pulled up and i do recall that two guys from Lucy's (i will not give names, like it really matters) just got up and grabbed the can and casually walked over and heaved it to the front of the bus. Thank god that there was no contact between people.I was shitting my pants cause we had about 10 - 20 guys there and Vanguard seemed to have 500. Not a great matchup right? I realized that St. Lucy's rep sucked because of a couple guys but we did have a good corp. So it was either march with St. Lucy's or go across town and join up with Blessed Sac. I just couldnt do it. I just wanted to say that i could say alot more but you get the idea. But i do have to say that im sure in your area you had some heated competitions with corps you seen every weekend. So did we, Blessed Sac, Garfield, Boston to name a few and you really have to work hard not to get into some battles. And being based out of Newark, N.J. kind of set the tone for some of the characters you would get. So i just wanted to let you guys know that most of us were in corps for the love of it, and i made many lifetime friends through Drum Corps. Oh by the way my name is John and i hope this helps some people understand that St. Lucy's as a whole is a great bunch of guys. Thanks.

Hi John from St. Lucy's!  Thanks for your great comments!

Yes, we also had some scrapes with certain local corps from time to time.  And your right, most of the time it was just a couple (or a few) guys in the corps that would like to go into battle. But as you have said, our experiences in drum corps, were most "definetely" about good people (kids) having a great time with great experiences.  And all these years later we still have a lot of passion for this great thing called drum corps. And I can see why we are all proud of the corps we marched in and the friends we made inside and outside our own corps. Wow, two great corps you had a chance to march with: St. Lucy's and Hawthorne!
